Mystic Defender
Not the most exciting game I've done a page on, but it's a fairly early title in Genesis history. In it, you play Joe Yamata (Kujaku), on a quest to rescue Alexandra (Ashura) from the villainous Zao (Nobunaga), who is using her soul to resurrect his master, Zareth (Kelvin), in Azuchi castle. You have four types of magic to attack with.
Enemies (info on mouseover)
These monks are all over the place.
They can do a few different things...
These little guys pace menacingly back and forth.
Bat thingies.
Look at it squish!
Tiny worms that climb up and down the trees of the first stage.
...like turning into big, clumsy heads that can sorta hop around. IMPRESSIVE! ...ARE YOU NOT IMPRESSED? The little pacing dudes make a satisfying splat when killed.
The monks can also create these giant butterflies.
These little guys pace menacingly back and forth.
..............IMPRESSIVE!!!
...but their remains will crawl around! Back and forth! With menace!
See, midget goo.
Midget gooooooo.
Cool, skinless heads that grow from the walls of the hives. They spit at you. Cool, skinless heads that grow from the walls of the hives. They spit at you.
Firebreathing heads from the "alien hives".
Clusters of wormy stuff that shoot some little wormies at you.
Evil alien arms that emerge from the walls in the brief, alien-hive-looking stages scattered throughout the game.
Pulsating fire-spraying thingies on the hive ceilings. Flying cells from stage 4.
Crawly thing HATES you! He's gonna bite you. He's gonna lay the hurtin' down, bitch.
Look at him go!
Flying cells from stage 4.
I LOVE THESE!!! From the "alien hive" stages. All they do is crawl slowly on the floor, but I love them! There's just something about them.
Some of them stand in place generating bouncing, metal balls or change into "bugs" that hop in place firing at you.
Boring things that shoot at you. You'll fight a lot of these guys in stages 5 and 7.
Biting, floating globs that chase you. Generated by the things to the left here.
"Bugs" that morph on-screen from the cloaked guys just hop up and down shooting...
Flying metal claws from the final stages.
The other enemy that comes from those things. Same as the flying cells, but these only move up vertically.
...whereas tons of crawling bugs will come at you from off-screen. They're pretty cool, but no major threat.

These growths on the floors and ceilings of stage 4 generate two types of enemies.
A single big worm you'll fight shortly before the real first boss.
A sort of mini-boss in stage 4. Flies around.
Not a boss, but you'll only fight this once, at the end of stage 1. It doesn't move, but it spits a lot.

Bosses (some short stages don't have boss fights)
-Stage 1-
The first real boss is a greenish demon who flips through the treetops and can roll into a blurry, impenetrable sphere.
-Stage 2-
These creepy cultists float spinning in the air, teleporting around the screen. When you kill them, their robes crumple to the ground. Once you go off screen, the leader (book guy) flies by and resurrects the cloaks into the first of those bug thingies.
-Stage 4-
The boss of this incredibly tough, organic-looking level are a pair of worms who rise up out of the acid and spit arcs of fiery-looking stuff. There's a pillar of guts to stand on between them but it's easier to fight them from the ledges to the left and right.
-Stage 5-
Some of the cloak-bug-things will stack up and morph into a giant worm that sways back and forth firing shots from its mouth. A bit later you'll fight it again with an armored guy for a head.
-Stage 7-
This guy is really, really hard and I hate him.
-Stage 8-
The boss fight is all there actually is to stage 8. A nasty immobile thing growing from Ashura/Alexanda (is that "Kelvin!?!"). It fires waves of little energy blasts and sends out little flying, biting mutants. Utterly shocking sega genesis nudity is your reward for defeating this tumorous lump.
