W-what the hell was THAT!?!?
That, readers, was a crucial step in Fern's quest completed almost instantaneously, rather than in a hundred intermittent updates over the course of one to three years, and you're welcome. We did establish at some point that events can progress at wildly different paces between zones, didn't we? And that us Narrations can put one's unspent narrative potential to a lot of good use.

FERN:
It...it feels weird...why did I "see" all that at once...I...

Uhh, you're WELCOME?...Is what the Narration might have said to the greything, if we hadn't already shaved off enough of its spiral to pull all that together in the first place. Again, no need to thank it.

FERN:
W...whuh? What???
W...whuh? What???
Siiighh. It was really very simple. By metabolizing unrealized event-concept, a Narration can convert a portion of its host's Narrative Potential into Hyperdilated Narrative Progression, effectively accelerating the branchination of the host's personal narrative or viable cross-narratives towards a desired direction. Or, to put it in cruder terminology...I "excreted" a burst of concentrated narrative power to orchestrate a quick "B-plot" that would benefit our "A-plot"...and all I had to do was "eat" an equivalent volume of my current host's potential existospan.

FERN:
Existospan...event-concept...n...narrative...potential? ...Um...just wondering out loud if...if I just lost lifespan...

The Narration would have thought her explanation fairly clear. She supposed "life's span" was one way to describe the limited single-track potential of a greybeast's narrative. Yes. Hardly that much. A trifle, really. Say, 1%, maybe 3% if the host is a heavy enough smoker. But now, this particular host was one step closer to reuniting with its biocreation. Seemed like a small price to pay, given all it had already gone through to achieve that end.

FERN:
I...g-guess so...
...please don't do it again...
......unless I say so.

Hmph. Our hard work never is properly appreciated. This Narration supposed there would always be such barriers in understanding, but no matter. What's done is done, and Fern was perhaps overdue to take stock of the current surroundings.
