's 2017 Horror Write-off:

No Longer Alone

Submitted by Nick (email)

I found myself in an area I haven't visited before in my life, and in the back of my mind, I know I don't belong here. My body is freezing and my surroundings feel cold. Everything is so dark. I can barely see a thing anymore. I want to go back, but where is back?  I don't know where I'm going and I'm afraid that I'm never going to get out. Everywhere I go is cold darkness. This is it, I'm going to spend the rest of my short life here in this unknown place, trapped and alone.

No... no, I'm not alone. I can faintly see something in the distance of the darkness which seems to go on and on forever. It might end up being nothing but I have to be right. I have to be confident, I must. That thing over there is someone, or something, that can help me. I am not alone anymore, I am not, I AM NOT. The thing I noticed in the distance notices me too, yes, yes it does. Now it just stares at me, it appears to be growing in size... no it isn't, it is just coming towards me, slithering towards me, slithering with intent to kill. I have to get out of here.

I try to get away from whatever this creature may be. I can't look behind me. I just have to keep going, going further into this cold darkness. My body is now frozen in place, I can barely move anymore. The thing has finally caught up to me. Now I am face to face with what I thought at first was help, but of course I'm wrong. I'm a stupid, useless being in this world. I'm so ignorant to get myself lost in this pitch black, freezing, darkness which I have no idea where or what this place is. The creature's face is as ugly as it's body is long. It's mouth is filled with jagged teeth made to kill. The creature opens it's jaw wide and begins to dislocate it. The lower part of the jaw extends out for me. With one fast jerk I am inside of its mouth. It begins to bite down on me, crushing my bones and organs. Everything hurts, I don't know how I can still think when my whole body is crushed and punctured.

I'm no longer scared, rather, I'm satisfied. Obviously I'll miss my life before this, I will miss the other creatures that look similar to myself, and the soft grainy ground beneath me, I will also miss the floating debris that comes from above, and the large, grey objects that looms above us all occasionally, but none of that matters now, because this is my destiny. In the face of a creature much greater than I am, I have to serve it, that is my purpose, everything's purpose. We all belong to a greater being than us, in a never-ending cycle of what is better than what. It is all only natural. As long as my death pleases this ugly, horrid, unidentifiable monster, my deed is done.

And the best part about all of it is... that here, I am no longer alone.
