Today's Digimon is based on one of my favorite of the more famous and traditional mythological beasts, a cockatrice! What is it about scary monster chickens that's just so appealing? Is it because chickens usually command so little respect from us that it feels more "ironic?" Personally, I think chickens just look cool. The cockatrice is said in various sources to either petrify or outright kill things with either its gaze, its breath, or physical contact, and Kokatorimon takes the petrification route.

In terms of design, this Digimon is almost nothing but a very big chicken, nice and straightforward, but with a more monstrous Digimon mouth with menacing teeth and gums set in the upper beak and one of those Violator-style lower jaws! ON A CHICKEN!! It can take so little sometimes to make a design stand out.

It's also worth mentioning that Kokatorimon was once the only flightless bird in Digimon, and an alternate evolution of Biyomon. It wasn't an outright failure, but you'd end up with Kokatorimon over Birdramon if you didn't take as good care of your little bird, and Kokatorimon is said to be incredibly jealous of all flying digimon but especially Birdramon.
