You can really see the influence of Evangelion's Angels in these things, with "Gatekeeper" especially resembling the more abstract varieties. When I first saw these designs back in the day, I kept assuming for some reason that the Reaper's "kernel" - the sphere of reaper goo we see here - constituted part of Gatekeeper, but Gatekeeper is actually just the surrounding halo, serving as a very, very weird defense system.

Gatekeeper's rectangular panels can detach and fly around to chop apart attackers, while the connecting yellow spheres are actually giant, horrible laser beam eyeballs. This monster is literally six giant eyeballs and twenty-two giant metallic sheets that float around in a ring until they have to kill something. That is awesome.
