AGUMON X

I mentioned Agumon X a couple times already, and here he is; not really all that different from regular Agumon, but I suppose that's the whole idea. The X-antibody has only made Agumon "more powerful" with a few subtle changes to his color pattern, though you've probably also noticed that the style of these illustrations has been rather different.

The X-antibody digimon were actually a pretty novel idea at the time; not only would they be variant forms of existing digimon, but they would be designed by a variety of new artists collected from the anime, manga and video game industry, who were told to redesign select digimon in any way they saw fit. We'll be spending quite a few more pages going over the most interesting of these, but for now, let's finish up this new Agumon line!

RATING:

ADULT: GREYMON X

Differences between Greymon and Greymon X are also rather subtle, with Greymon X possessing slightly nastier teeth and claws, more horns, and barbs along the lip of its "helmet," rather like an additional row of fangs.

RATING:

PERFECT: METALGREYMON X

This is where the designs really start to diverge under the X-antibody influence; this Metalgreymon has much blockier cybernetics, a more massive knife-like blade on its snout, and its wings are sort of generated as energy by the thrusters on its back. It also has some interesting little hex-shaped scales, the same color as its mechanical enhancements, so I guess they represent metallic contamination in its flesh?

RATING:

ULTIMATE: WARGREYMON X

Finally, we have the obvious X-antibody Wargreymon. While I wasn't particularly into Wargreymon and this version isn't really my thing either, I have to say that it's a pretty vast improvement. Aspects of its design remind me of an Evangelion, while others make me think of Samus Aran. I'd go so far as to say that, for a dinosaur guy covered in armor, Wargreymon X is actually rather beautiful.

RATING:

ALTERNATIVE ULTIMATE: GAIOUMON

Also capable of evolving from the Dorumon line, Gaioumon was originally designed to be Black Wargreymon X, but the Digimon team apparently loved it so much, they wanted it to be its own digimon. I suppose it's not bad; you can't go wrong with red highlights on such a dark color scheme. Its main gimmick is just that it's a dual sword-wielding dragon guy.

RATING:

ALTERNATIVE ADULT: TYRANNOMON X

Strangely enough, the X-antibody version of Tyrannomon was added in only the year 2018, while every other monster on this page was released from 2002-2004, with the original X-antibody storyline. Well, welcome to the party, Tyrannomon X! It's a pretty neat looking take on Digimon's less famous T-rex, a little sleeker and more life-like, with many more back spines that look almost crystalline!

RATING:

ALTERNATIVE PERFECT: METALTYRANNOMON X

Since we included the Tyrannomons in our original Agumon review, we may as well do so for the X-line as well. Metaltyrannomon X is alright, still clearly a messed-up cyborg, though it's not nearly as decrepit and ghastly as the original, so for that, it has to lose a point.

RATING:

ALTERNATE ULTIMATE: CHAOSDRAMON X

Actually not quite as cool to me as regular Chaosdramon, once again because of the boxier and more angular armor, but it's pretty cool that the ultimate-ultimate evil dinosaur gets an X antibody form.
