CLASS: ARTHROPOID BASE ORGANISM: Dobsonflies are large, basal flying insects most recognized for the elongated mandibles of the males, which are utilized to attract females and cradle them during the mating process but not otherwise functional as jaws. The blunt jaws of the females can deliver a powerful defensive bite, but both sexes are slow, awkward fliers. Larvae or "hellgrammites" are fully aquatic, predatory and live for many years before their brief imago period. Contents copyright Jonathan Wojcik
