CLASS: ARTHROPOID BASE ORGANISM: the Embioptera or "webspinners" are obscure, tiny insects of uncertain taxonomy, possessing up to several hundred silk glands in their enlarged forelimbs. Feeding on lichens, molds and algae, females construct silken galleries between the cracks and crevices of tree bark, soil or leaf litter, where they diligently nurture their young. Winged males are short lived, and do not appear to feed at all in their brief adult life. Contents copyright Jonathan Wojcik
