Mega Froslass

...I don't think this was originally designed to be a Mega. This isn't really how most Megas are designed. Usually, the original Pokemon is still in there, with just some key elements that have been added or altered in some way. This, however, dramatically exaggerates every characteristic of Froslass:

This design, in fact, leaves very little untouched. The eye sockets are now pointed, the eyes themselves are narrower and more sinister, the arms are longer and thinner, the sleevelike fins are much larger, the back of the head is extended into a huge fleshy flap to evoke long "hair," the ice crystal horns are longer and more threatening, and a much longer "dress" extends out the bottom of its body, increasing its height several times over. This extended lower body also includes embedded ice crystals, nicely contrasting the ice horns I always thought were slightly incongruous. A large cloud of frosty vapor billows out from where the skirt splits open, and finally, this split shows us multiple underlying layers of blue "fabric" (skin, I'm pretty sure).

It's very cool looking, menacing and elegant, but also very much how you would expect a full blown cross-gen evolution to be designed. Froslass itself already had a kind of unfinished "middle stage" feeling to me I could never quite place, particularly with its stubby ice horns, and now that's even more glaring. It even shifts from looking shy and uncertain to confident and conniving, as is so common among other Pokemon as they mature and metamorphose. Did they just dump some unused evolution ideas into this game as megas, so they wouldn't have to expand the Pokedex with new entries? BOOOOO! The lack of whole new forms or evolutions was my first disappointment with Z-A, before my second disappointment with Z-A was everything else about Z-A!

What really stinks is that, to this day, a Pokemon with a mega evolution has never received a new non-mega evolution. If that's an internal rule, then I hope a mega evolution is truly all you wanted out of Froslass, because this may be all it's ever getting again, and this will only be playable in those special, select games that decide to re-enable the mega mechanic. If Froslass was one of my own personal top favorites, I'd be disappointed by the fact that this is "only" its Mega design. It gets a 5/5 as a design, but that's precisely why it shouldn't have been a mere "form."
