BONUS MONSTER 22:
Free, additional supplementary monsters for the Mortasheen Tabletop RPG Core Rulebook, created by Jonathan Wojcik, additional writing and all gameplay stats by Bonnie Saucier. For use with the gameplay system by Morgan Mullins!
Today's monster is a variant on one you'll find in the first book, but unlike Bogweasel, it's not a monster you can find in the old archives. Gellbent is one of many created brand new for the book only, part of a new Joker class subtype with a candy and dessert theme!
Gellbent was designed by myself, but illustrated by Biomush, who also illustrated my favorite short creepypasta project.
VARIANT:
Enveloping Ambrosia
GELLBENT SWEETMEATS
CLASS: JOKER (GLUCOID)
Description:
This monster resembles a gigantic dome of pinkish gelatin with a skirt of thin tentacles lining its bottom edge. Inside the jelly are many peculiar shapes, superficially resembling hunks of meat, dead fish, body organs or tong-like jaws.
BIOLOGY:
This subvariety of the Gellbent was engineered by the meat processing conglomeration, Flenseco. It retains many of the same biological characteristics, but its funnel-shaped organelles are capable of emitting microwave radiation, while its fork-tailed organelles emit high voltage electricity, employed together with its hardened jaw organs to not only incapacitate struggling prey but roast raw meat to perfection. Its anaerobic gelatinous matrix contains as much salt as sugar when compared to other Glucoids, and provides an ideal environment to keep food items preserved almost indefinitely until consumption.
BEHAVIOR:
While traditional Gellbent tend to feed indiscriminately and almost thoughtlessly, a sweetmeats is much more conscious of its meals, always excited to taste a new variety of meat and experiment with different preparation methods from flash frying to slow roasting and every possible degree of fermentation, inevitably developing its own complex recipes it may become eager to share with other creatures.
An especially massive Sweetmeats is in service to Flenseco's Arthropoid mistress, who worked directly on their original development project.
Concept Notes:
Coming up with food themed and meat-themed monsters for Mortasheen is trickier for me than you'd think, because I already expended many of my ideas for that in the setting of The Burgrr Entries and Awful Hospital, and it can make them feel redundant or less interesting to me anymore in other settings. I try to keep Mortasheen monsters just a little more "creature" than "animated object" to keep my different settings distinct, but when the foods in question are already made out of creatures, it can be a finer line!Gellbent itself is actually inspired heavily by the giant jellyfish-like "amoeba" from the sci fi film The Angry Red Planet:
