NECROMON
It took many years for Digimon to fill in a complete Spooky Ghosts evolution line. First there was the introduction of the child-level Ghostmon, and now we have the Ultimate-level Necromon, which is funny to me personally because that was also the original title of my heavily Digimon-inspired Mortasheen project. Designed especially to evolve from Phantomon, this guy is a glowing blue spectral humanoid with occult robes, a threatening golden skull mask, huge purple bone-and-tooth lined shoulder pads, dripping candles atop said shoulder pads and a total of four flaming blue arms. The upper arms grasp a huge, stony sword fashioned from a grave marker, while the larger, lower arms hold a burning skull lantern and a necronomicon, of course.
The first thing anyone notices probably isn't any of those things, however, but rather the fact that there are whole Bakemon and a Soulmon orbiting around this guy. It's rare, but always fun when a Digimon includes lower-stage Digimon as part of its design or powers. Multiple friends in one! Even the necronomicon it's holding has a Digimon-style eyeball in its fleshy cover, and is mentioned in Necromon's bio as "being summoned like a ghost" itself! Friends upon friends!
It'd be pretty amazing if such a spooky spellbook were its own child-stage Digimon, really. I know Ghostmon is supposed to perfectly fill this niche, but I still think its design is too jarring a mis-match with Bakemon. A necronomicon as a Digimon would feel even more universal to all ghost and demon evolutions, but I guess a little tombstone creature also would. Or just a skull. Or a singular pumpkin? A spooky eyeball? A zombie hand? Wow, there are so many options!
I guess we do already have Candlemon, at least, which I suggested before as the child for a Bakemon to Pumpkinmon line, and would still be my first choice out of all canon options.
On a semifinal note, I might have reserved this review for a later cluster of Digimon from the same series, but it was too tempting to let this be review #444.
I should mention that it also has kind of a "designated" further evolution, but different enough that I felt it should be a review of its own, which will be the case for several of those other Digimon I just mentioned.
